RULES FOR THE ‘DO THE ‘WRITE’ THING’ SHORT STORY COMPETITION’ 2007 IN ASSOCIATION WITH SEOIGE&O’SHEA AND POOLBEG PRESS
1. The competition is open to people born in or normally resident in the island of Ireland.
2. Only one entry per person is allowed.
3. Entries are to be in English and should be the original work of the author and should not have been previously published. Neither should the author have had a novel previously published.
4. Entries should be within the range of 4,500 words and 5,500 words. Entries outside this word range will not be considered.
5. Entries, which need to be stories of fiction in the popular genre, should be double-spaced, pages numbers and typewritten on one side of A4 paper. The author’s name and contact details should not be included on the typescript but should be clearly written on a separate page with the entry. Manuscripts will not be returned so authors are advised to retain a copy of their work.
6. Correspondence will only be entered into with winning entries.
7. Entries should be sent to ‘Do The ‘Write’ Thing’ Short Story Competition, Seoige & O’Shea, Montrose House, RTE, Donnybrook, Dublin 4.
8. Entries will be accepted from Wednesday, January 24th, 2007 to 5pm on Thursday, March 15th 2007.
9. The decision of the judges is final and RTE / Producers cannot enter into any correspondence concerning the judging or merits of any entry.
10. The authors of the fourteen winning short stories will have their work published by Poolbeg Press in a book of short stories, to be titled ‘Do The ‘Write’ Thing.’ Each individual author will sign a contract with Poolbeg to allow their short story to be published in this collection in the island of Ireland. The contracts will be between Poolbeg Press and individual authors. RTE / Producers are not party to these contracts.
11. Poolbeg Press will offer the overall winner the chance of publishing their first novel, if material is deemed suitable by Poolbeg. RTE / Producers will not enter into discussion regarding the merit of any work submitted for consideration for publication of a first novel by the overall winner of the short story competition. Any agreement for publication of a first novel by Poolbeg for the overall winner, will be a matter of concern to only Poolbeg Press and the winning author. Terms and conditions regarding this will be set down by Poolbeg Press. This will be an individual agreement between the overall winning author and Poolbeg Press, with grounds for publication set down by the publishing company.
12. The author will agree to have their work included with thirteen other stories, in a collection of short stories, titled ‘Do The ‘Write’ Thing’, and within this volume only. The winners will agree to have their work published in a collection with thirteen other stories with Poolbeg Press.
13. Poolbeg Press will have the right to publish the winning short stories in the book ‘Do the ‘write’ thing.
14. As well as publication in the ‘Do The ‘Write’ Thing’ book of short stories, the overall winner of the ‘Seoige & O’Shea Short Story Competition’ will win a one to one writer’s weekend workshop with best-selling author, Geraldine O’Neill in Tullamore, County Offaly. Travel and accommodation will be included.
15. The author agrees that their share of royalties will be donated to charity.
16. Results will be announced in April.
17. The book of short stories will be published by Poolbeg Press in Autumn 2007.
