New teen fiction! Claire Hennessy

There’s more to life than exams. Except when it’s the Leaving Cert. Sixth year. It’s the year of: crazy studying, frantic calculations of points, and putting your life on hold for the sake of your future. So Vicky and Anna have always believed, anyway. It is most certainly not a year of: developing an addiction to bad reality television, trying to have a relationship with a boy who doesn’t believe in ‘being serious’, becoming hopelessly infatuated with a college student, suddenly not having a clue what you want to do with the rest of your life, fights with your best friends, uncovering secrets in your family, contemplating what being ‘smart’ really means, and finding any excuse to have a party – right?

That Girlchennessy8 €7.99 €7.99
That Girl Kim’s not the kind of girl who worries too much, but there’s something about her upcoming 16th birthday celebration that’s stressing her out.

Is it her anxiety about mixing friends who haven’t met before? Is it that one person after another is dropping out to go to a concert instead? Or the fear that her parents will hover over everyone all night long?
Or could it be her confused feelings about her brother’s friend, someone she’s known since she was a kid and who understands her the way very few people do? Is there any place for such a friendship in her life? Shouldn’t her great boyfriend be enough?

Last time she checked, birthday parties were meant to be fun – but this one is looking like a disaster waiting to happen!

All the drama, all the insight, all the fun that we have come to expect – her best novel to date!

When 14-year-old Claudia gets home one day to find her mother’s walked out, she doesn’t know what to think. “I can’t do this anymore” is hardly an explanation, and her dad is too busy with work to offer any insight into whyhis wife has left, nor does he seem to even take it seriously. Her older brother Ben is no use either – he’s too busy hating school and being cool to bother even talking to her, unless he wants something – and her younger sister Julie is engrossed in her sulking and getting into fights. Her friends have no idea about what’s going on – Beth might care, but with Christy never shutting up about her latest boyfriend it’s hard to get a word in edgeways, and anyway, maybe some things are better left within the family. Her mum leaving changes everything, and even if she does come back, nothing’s ever going to be the same ever again.
Good Girls Don'tchennessy5 €7.99 €7.99
Good Girls Don't Emily Keating, however, is not a good girl, unlike her sanctimonious elder sister. But she's a little too busy with various complications in her life to be too concerned about that. There's Declan, her depressed friend who she tries to help in a way that only ends up contributing to the problem. Or Lucy, a former crush whose relationship is suddenly becoming a lot more serious. Or Hugh, Emily's ex-boyfriend (now going out with a school-friend of hers) who she still has unresolved issues with. Or Barry, her dearest friend, and according to almost everyone, the one she's destined to be with, despite their insistence that they're just good friends. (Aren't they?)

But why does she cut herself? She's not from a dysfunctional family, hasn't had a horrible childhood experience and she has friends: Leanne - sarcastic bitchy, Tina - always on a diet, Karen - fits in everywhere.
